All fore the best

In January of 2021, Transport for NSW received planning approval for the Western Harbour Tunnel and Warringah Freeway Upgrade with the project plans including impacts to Cammeray Golf Course and Balgowlah Golf Course.

The project included a commitment to prepare a Thematic Heritage Study of Northern Sydney's golf courses to assist in identifying other potential heritage items in the region that demonstrate similar significance as the Cammeray Golf Course (1906).

Artefact was engaged to prepare this Thematic Study by systematically documenting the history and evaluating the heritage characteristics of the 39 operating and 3 closed golf courses in the Northern Sydney region.

OUR
SOLUTION

The scale of this project required extensive planning and the establishment of an inventory of relevant golf courses to streamline team coordination and research.

With the application of this inventory, the 39 golf courses were evaluated by Artefact’s heritage specialists to establish:

  • The origins and history of each golf course
  • Environmental context
  • The heritage importance of architectural and landscaping features
  • Current heritage listings
  • Overlapping heritage conservation areas

SUCCESS

The result was a comprehensive history of North Sydney’s golf courses to inform the significant heritage and potential risks from future works.

Findings identified 15 of the 39 operating golf courses to be registered as heritage items on Local Environmental Plans and 3 golf courses falling within locally listed heritage conservation areas.

Historical research also revealed the earliest records of golfing in Australia taking place in 1839, on grounds which are now part of the University of Sydney Campus; 45 years prior to the 1884 establishment of Australia’s first formal golf club, The Australian Golf Club at Kensington.

“Golf courses are important reserves of urban amenity for their social, environmental and heritage values. Artefact was pleased to have prepared this comprehensive Study so that the contextual heritage significance of these important resources can be understood and inform future infrastructure and development proposals on Sydney’s North Shore.”
