SASHA

My role at Artefact is a Graduate Heritage Consultant with the Built Heritage team. Having witnessed enormous change in the built environment, I have come to treasure our built heritage more and more as time goes on. Change is inevitable, but valuable things can be protected. I am passionate about advocating for heritage and am excited to be contributing to conserving built heritage in a changing world.

ABOUT

SASHA

My career has spanned the art and corporate worlds. As an artist I created small to large scale works ranging from small panels to wall murals. I also hold a Bachelor of Business and have worked in corporate procurement and logistics and as a business analyst for Cochlear and AstraZeneca. After becoming a parent, I successfully transformed a hobby restoring antiques to a business importing and restoring Georgian and Victorian rocking horses, and curating collections for displays and private clients. A growing appreciation of the importance of preserving material heritage led me to complete a Masters of Heritage Conservation. I'm delighted to be able to use my passion and skills in a broader context.

MY ARTEFACT

My artefact is a family heirloom, a carved ivory figurine of Guanyin - a Buddhist deity of compassion and mercy. My parents were both born in China to Russian parents and were children when they came to Australia as political refugees. My paternal grandmother brought whatever valuable items from China she could, to sell "for a rainy day". This figurine represents so much to me: it reminds me of family gatherings at my grandmother's home, it's a tangible connection to my family's migration to Australia and the cultural diversity of our past. I've always loved how beautiful and finely made it is, but lately it reminds me of the compassion and mercy my grandparents were shown by Australia after the hardship of immigration.
