Broadmeadow Master Plan

Artefact served as the Historical and Aboriginal Heritage Consultant to inform the development of the historic Broadmeadow Locomotive Depot precinct.

The project

Location: Broadmeadow, Newcastle NSW on Awabakal Country

The Broadmeadow Locomotive Depot Precinct has been identified in numerous State and local strategic land use and development plans for its potential future use as residential, commercial and/or employment land.

With the decision to relocate all heritage rolling stock to a more suitable facility at the Chullora Heritage Hub, the site has become surplus to requirements and is available for re-purposing to support the transformation of the Broadmeadow Catalyst Areas.

Heritage solution

Artefact as the Historical and Aboriginal Heritage Consultant provided the following services:

• An Assessment of Constraints

• A Conservation Management Plan pathway

• A Non-Aboriginal Heritage Impact Assessment suitable to support the preparation and lodgement of a Planning Proposal to rezone the Broadmeadow site. This includes providing advice into the master planning and heritage design development phase.

• A Conservation Management Plan for the retention and reuse of significant built heritage items on the site and collaborate with the lead consultant with regard to Government stakeholder consultation to achieve an approval.

• Heritage Interpretation principals (included in the CMP)

• Connecting with Country reporting and facilitation

• ACHAR

A big thank you from myself and colleague for all of your hard work and
dedication over the past couple of years in establishing a clear and supportable vision for the Broadmeadow Locomotive Precinct.

All of the effort and work the team undertook directly influenced and supported the TAM property being able to form a significant part of
this rezoning achievement, setting up a key urban renewal precinct for success.
