First Nations First

Artefact sponsored the Dhuluny Conference, convened by the Wiradjuri Elders, at Charles Sturt University in Bathurst in 2024. Our resident historian Stephen Gapps presented his paper entitled ‘A Very Uncivil War’.

Artefact spent the day working with the team at IndigiGrow — an Aboriginal-owned, not-for-profit native plant nursery. They potted over 300 seedlings, tried bush foods and learnt about creating balance in the sustainability chain.

Artefact hosted the Sydney launch of Dr Stephen Gapps’ book ‘Uprising’, which was launched by fellow truth teller David Marr. Stephen is a public historian working to bring Frontier War histories into broader recognition as Australia’s First Wars.

Artefact designed a heritage site training program for Community members that have traditional knowledge but not necessarily formal training in the field or an understanding of legislation that underpins heritage work, providing career pathways for Aboriginal people.

At Artefact, we are committed to a collaborative future in heritage management alongside First Nations communities. Our Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Officer (ACHO) program nurtures upcoming First Nations heritage professionals through employment, training, and mentorship.
