Historian Dr Stephen Gapps outlines an ARC linkage grant project, by Artefact and the University of Sydney, that sets out to discover where, how and why defensive buildings and structures were built in New South Wales between 1788 and 1850.
This is further to the conference paper ‘Architecture for a Nervous Landscape: Defensive Buildings in NSW 1788-1850’ presented at the ICOMOS ‘Our Shared Heritage: Un-Settling Ground’ National Conference in 2025.

Uprising - truth telling
Artefact hosted the Sydney launch of Dr Stephen Gapps’ book Uprising, which was launched by fellow truth teller David Marr. Stephen is a public historian working to bring Frontier War histories into broader recognition as Australia’s First Wars and is the Senior Associate and Historian at Artefact Heritage & Environment.
A very un-civil war
Author of Gudyarra – The First Wiradyuri War of Resistance, The Bathurst War 1822-1824, Dr Stephen Gapps spoke at the Dhuluny Conference in 2024.
The Conference was a series of truth-telling events commemorating the 200th anniversary of the declaration of martial law in the Bathurst region in August 1824. The declaration was in response to resistance warfare by Wiradyuri people and signified a period of intense frontier violence.
