Diona Ward Joint Venture (DWJV) was appointed by Transport for NSW to deliver the Parramatta Light Rail enabling works. DWJV’s Construction Environmental Management Plan for this Critical State Significant Infrastructure project entailed sensitive handling of four heritage-listed sites in the Parramatta CBD. Both the Minister’s Conditions of Approval and the Revised Environmental Mitigation and Management Measures required a risk minimisation approach to potential Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal archaeology along the route.
DWJV commissioned Artefact to prepare a Heritage Management Sub Plan, and to undertake archaeological test excavation and salvage excavation within the proposed impact footprints. Overseen by Artefact’s Excavation Director, Dr Iain Stuart, and project managed by archaeologist HollyMae Steane Price, this work was completed with Deerubbin Local Aboriginal Land Council (LALC). Working together, Artefact and DWJV ensured that complex statutory and stakeholder requirements were met. Once excavation was completed, selected archaeological materials were salvaged for use by Deerubbin LALC, while historical artefacts were kept for heritage interpretation installations.
Artefact coordinated work across four heritage-listed sites in the Parramatta CBD to provide appropriate recording, reporting, consultation and interpretation outcomes for DWJV.
Our components were delivered on time and within budget, enabling DWJV to successfully complete their light rail enabling works.
