Caring in Concord

As part of a statewide initiative to reform NSW’s mental health services, the NSW Government has proposed to construct a new forensic mental health facility within the Concord Repatriation General Hospital campus.

This locally heritage listed hospital site was originally developed in the 20th Century as a military hospital in response to the outbreak of World War Two.

Artefact was engaged to develop a Historical Statement of Heritage Impact report to guide and assess the development of the new mental health facility within this heritage listed hospital campus.

OUR
SOLUTION

As the project involves the addition of a contemporary building to the hospital site and components of demolition, it was crucial to gain a comprehensive understanding of this extensive site and its various components.

The resultant report provided a concise history of the hospital and the broader Concord context, outlined the heritage significance of the hospital and development area, and considered the possible impact of the new development on the heritage values of the place.

SUCCESS

Artefact’s final and comprehensive report advised that the proposed new health facility will have potential negligible physical and visual impact to the heritage values of the Concord Hospital precinct.

The new facility will be named ‘Burudyara’ - a local Aboriginal dialect word for butterfly. Construction is expected to start in early 2024 and is due for completion by late 2025.

The Artefact team was proud to have helped support the development pathway for this new forensic mental health unit in Sydney.

“Artefact’s report on the potential heritage impact of the development was well written and comprehensive.”
