I have experience preparing heritage assessments for Aboriginal cultural heritage including the consultation process, archaeological test excavations and field survey.

I have also worked on transport, renewable infrastructure, and mining projects, written a moveable cultural heritage strategy for state government infrastructure, undertaken photographic archival recordings, and prepared historical heritage assessments.

ABOUT

KRISTEN

I’ve always been fascinated by archaeology and stories about ancient people - reading my father’s National Geographic magazines as a child.

I completed an Honours degree in Classical Studies, writing a research paper on the raw materials excavated from a Bronze Age Mediterranean shipwreck, plus postgraduate Museum Studies qualifications.

My love of tangible objects led me to a career working in museums and collecting institutions, such as the State Library of NSW and award-winning Newcastle Museum.

I’ve volunteered on archaeological excavations in Syria and Jordan, fuelling my passion for ancient cultures.

Recently, I’ve completed a Graduate Certificate in Archaeology and Masters of Cultural Heritage & Museum Studies (specialising in Heritage Practice) and I’m continuing to expand my knowledge and capabilities in cultural heritage and archaeological practice.

“Life begins at the end of your comfort zone."

This quote is a reminder to always push forward and strive, to challenge myself to learn, grow and to be grateful for discomfort because from adversity often comes success.

MY ARTEFACT

My artefact is this glass vase that I purchased while exploring the Medhat Basha Souq in Damascus, Syria.

I love its simplicity and lack of elaborate decoration, yet it is elegant. It reminds me how cherished objects also hold the memories and stories that we tell to give them meaning.

Glass-making has always fascinated me, from its origins in ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt to the Roman Empire and modern times. The artisan skills used to create pieces such as this are testimony to the importance of knowledge and oral traditions for the intangible cultural heritage of ancient peoples.
